A vehicle detection loop wire is a continuous loop of insulated copper wire embedded beneath the road surface that, when a vehicle drives over it, disrupts the magnetic field it creates, thereby sending a signal to a detector which can then trigger actions like changing a traffic light or opening a gate; essentially acting as a sensor to detect the presence of a vehicle.
