catgut suture (chromic)” is a type of absorbable surgical suture made from purified collagen fibers extracted from the submucosa of sheep intestines, which has been treated with chromic salts to slow down its absorption rate, allowing it to maintain tensile strength for a longer period compared to plain catgut; essentially, it’s a natural, biodegradable suture with enhanced holding power due to the chromic treatment. 

Chromic catgut suture is a variant treated with chromic acid salts. This treatment produces roughly twice the suture-holding time of plain catgut, but greater tissue inflammation occurs. Full tensile strength is extended to 18–21 days. Fast catgut suture is heat-treated to give even more rapid absorption in the body.
