Chromic – coated gut by Scantrik

Chromic catgut is a modification of plain catgut that is tanned with chromic salts to improve strength and delay dissolution. Gut is absorbed by phagocytosis, and is associated with a marked tissue inflammation that can be detrimental to healing.

“chromic coated gut” refers to a surgical suture made from natural collagen fibers derived from animal intestines (typically sheep or cattle), which has been treated with chromium salts to significantly increase its absorption time and tensile strength compared to plain gut, making it a more durable absorbable suture used in various soft tissue surgeries; essentially, the chromic coating delays the body’s breakdown of the suture, allowing it to hold the tissue together for a longer period before dissolving completely.
